Making kids wear helmets to ride their bikes keeps them from harm. Making them put on their seatbelt, use booster seats, and/or car seats as appropriate to their age keeps them from harm. Teaching them to have a healthy fear of crossing the street without looking keeps them from harm. Making sure your children eat a well balanced meal keeps them from harm.
Those things are sensible responses to real threats. But attempting to protect them from a risk about as rare as hitting the lottery is about as stupid as playing the lottery. Unless you are one of these people who fail to understand the math and use clueless reasoning like "someone has to win" in order to justify spending money on lottery tickets, you shouldn't make that same irrational mistake when it comes to your children. No one should be proud of ignorance. |
