There is a line of logic that most visibly emerged in the early 19th century Romantic movement as well as the 1960s which goes something like this:
God is love Our relationship is one of love Therefore it is of God. Having spent a happy morning yesterday ploughing through how the Greek fathers of the church understood Genesis 1, I was bemused to read what John of Damascus argues. He suggests - out of a deep prejudice against sex - that if humanity hadn't fallen, God would have used a different means for humans to multiply and fill the earth. Whilst I totally disagree with him on this, I do think that it helps remind us of the conflict between eros and agape that the existence of only one word in English to translate them both tends to obscure. To return to our exercise in logic God is agape Our relationship is one of eros Therefore it is of God really doesn't work so well... |
