I like rap as a musical form, but the urban American gangsta add-on, which wasn't in the genre at first (Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash), has literally turned suburbs into ghettos and schools into prisons, regardless of demographics. It's turned the children of proud free-born African immigrants into jaundiced members of the ex-slave mentality and, all in all, has just made huge cultural vortex that ultimately subsidizes the massive prison industry. In other countries, rap doesn't do that. OK, we've had our dramatic fun, but it's time for this endless degrading cliche-series to pack it in. Eminem at least sometimes lets his 'flow' surge out beyond this river of filth, but as you can see, sometimes he just dives right back in. I suppose he thinks it makes him authentic. |
