isnt it more that activism at that level requires either a colossal amount of bravery and self-confidence which would be tested to the limit [and very likely beyond] by prejudices of all sorts? To have that kind of confidence requires either sanctity at the highest level or . . . . a degree of ignorance about the way society actually feels and perhaps a lack of self-knowledge too.(as was likely in Mr McClellan's case.)Isnt it also that such activism can only realistically happen if there is a support group and society hates only one thing more than a pedophile and that is a GROUP of pedophiles.
As you say, its a no-win I think. I remember one very chilling story some years back (80s I think) when an 'oprah' type morning tv show did a discussion about pedophilia and had somehow persuaded an ex-offender to come in and talk about his feelings. When he mentioned a 'relationship' he was having someone watching promptly phoned the police and they were waiting to take him away at the end of the programme. I never did find out what happened to the poor guy. |
