When I think about this Scripturally the answer that rings true for me is that God is testing our faith.

By this I mean both our belief and our faithfulness.

He wants us to put our trust and confidence in His righteousness (so that we deffer to His judgment in matters of morality) and His mercy (so that we confidently receive His offer of forgiveness in Jesus).

So everything is about God testing our faith and to pass we need to believe what He has told us in the word and to stay true in the face of every opposition and temptation.
