I've only gotten to know a few gay kids (as I've taught a class as well) and sadly it wasn't enough. I sort of live in an area of a nation where homosexuality hasn't settled in enough yet, so coming out is kind of a huge thing. It took me 11 years of knowing for sure I was gay to finally come out to my parents. And I was far into my 20s by then.

Watching these 11, 12, and 13 year olds come out of the closet is quite inspiring.
