I think this only really happens under two conditions:

1. The boy turns out to be gay
2. The man disappears from his life

Even then, it's not certain to occur; Augustin Burroughs doesn't express such a feeling in his memoir "Running With Scissors". Under any other scenario this doesn't appear to be a plausible outcome.
