The earliest Christians saw sex as inherently evil and taught that the ideal lifestyle is one of celibacy. They also taught that as a last resort, one should get married but that one should avoid enjoying sex.


Sex for procreation alone probably came later, though not much later since Justin the Martyr spoke of that ideal as if it were the commonly accepted practice of the time. His time being the second century, some 50 years after the last books of the New Testament were written and before the bible as a canon existed.
