Things seem as crazy as they have always been.
I think that for the most part, the world is a far safer and more moral place than it has ever been. Sure, we are still a world at war and there are bandits who will swoop in and kidnap scores of young girls in Nigeria. We still have countries executing people for converting to Christianity or for preaching the word. But nowadays those are exceptions that are widely criticized. There was a time when that was the law among the world powers and no one considered it wrong. We live in a world that no longer sees Roman roads lined with crucified bodies as normal. A world that denounces rather than embracing slavery. A world that no longer throws Christians to the lions or embraces gladiator battles to death as a perfectly moral form of entertainment. We live in a world where people, for the most part, are no longer forced into caste systems and where things like education and health care, once considered luxuries are increasingly considered rights. We have come a long way. To top it off, crime hasn't been this low in decades. Yes, there's crazy things happening. There's always been crazy things happening. Heck, one time, the pope dug up the decaying body of the previous pope, had it propped up in a courtroom and proceeded to put the old pope through trial before excommunicating him and re-burying the body. Crazy things happen. Are these times as bad as the Holocaust? Are these times as scary as the times of the black death? Not really. |
