The material you are talking about was rejected by the church. The fact that it disappeared for centuries is a strong sign to me that God was not impressed by it; if it was the truth, He would have acted to ensure it was available.
The point about idolatry is that we are constructing a god to conform to what WE want, not according to what He really is. It's always attractive, and we all do it to some extent, but it will mess us up.
