Revelations was supposedly written by John while he was exiled. However, it doesn't fit with the writing style of his previous book and how it came to be discovered is questionable. Since religion was the original form of government it wouldn't surprise me if this was written to ensure followers of Christ still had something to fear. After all, wouldn't you rather play it safe than sorry and do as you were commanded in order to be saved and avoid the horrors written in Revelations. People used to fear the wrath of God, now we fear the government.
