That, along with the resurrection, is the central feature of our faith - a man dying in agony on the cross. It is celebrated at every eucharist / communion service. How they react to that event is the central distinction between Judaism and Christianity.

It is the teaching of Christianity that something of eternal value was achieved by that man dying on the cross - and we are charged with sharing the news of it to the world.

One of the less helpful contributions to the church in about 400 AD emerged from the British Isles. Its author was Pelagius; he taught most people could get to heaven by their own endeavours. It is a belief that is extremely attractive to the modern mind, and also pops up in Islam, but is absolute opposed by the Christian teachers of the day - the link is to Augustine of Hippo's work designed to demolish it. At the centre of Christianity is the grace of God - unmerited and necessary because of sin.

Maybe I'm overrreacting - but Dannyboy is welcome to put my mind at rest. And if you're suffering from insomnia, Augustine is a good cure!
