Guilt from doing that, along with the rejection of the Anglo Catholic revival of the 19th century, has led to the ridiculous leniency of the 20th century. I tend to be happy to apply the Gamaliel principle to history, up to a point - it is clear that those revival movements have prospered, and their core doctrine is sound. By contrast the liberals are notable, at least in my experience, for being almost parasitical on the conservatives, usually drawing their members from the disenchanged offspring of mainstream Christians and seeing their own kids grow up as either non Christians or reverting back to the faith of the fathers. Certainly in Britain there has been no significant movement of people into the church as a result of the liberalising messages of the hierarchy - the diocese of Durham is not a hotbed of church growth.....
