| is of an 8 year old girl snatched from the roadside in the countryside and later found naked and murdered in a hedge by the road; probably having been raped although I don't think that it has ever been publicly confirmed by the police. This, and the drip of news about the investigation (such as the discovery this week of some more of her clothing) whiped up by the tabloid press has led to pressure for MORE to be DONE about paedophiles. Proposals for the public revelation of the names and addresses of convicted paedophiles were endorsed by the girls parents. A national newspaper published the names and addresses of some convicted people. This led to a particular demonstration / riot in a public housing project in Portsmouth where the demonstrators claimed that some of the people living in the houses were convicted paedophiles - and they didn't want them in their area (question - so where should they go?). However this and the hounding out of his house of an innocent man led to it dawning on the government that the consequence of such a move would be LESS control of the released abusers, as they would be forced to go underground, rather than more, so the proposals seem to have faded out. |
