"If children are capable of being scarred when they are in a protective environment (a home, a school, whatever), then what do you think the world will be like when they don't have that protection anymore?"
You could make the same (flawed) argument about battered wives. They should stay home because it's even more nasty "out there."

No, I'm not making that (flawed) argument, you are.
I'm saying that children are abused in their own homes. So, are battered women. And both have an option to get out. Children through legal recourse and women through just walking away. Either way, all it takes is for it to get someone's attention who will do something about it.

The problem with you is that you make monumental leaps of illogic.
I said nothing about children/battered women staying at home because the real world is so much more nasty. Everyone has the right to be safe.

What I'm saying is that, if a child is capable of being scarred (not scared) in their own home, how much more of a chance will they have if the one place they would expect to be safe is no longer safe?
