I agree totally with what you said. I may be evangelical, but I also have tried my best to reconcile science with my beliefs. God created the physical universe, and I don't see how God could have created in ways that contradict his own will and his word. So obviously, science and the Bible are both true, and somehow or another, they ought to be reconciled.

Anyhoo, things like the creation story are just like Jesus' parables to me. Of course, I don't think there literally were six days, however, the "days" are just parables for what really happened. It doesn't make the story useless to look at it this way, I think.

When Jesus said the kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, he obviously didn't mean that churches should all have mustard gardens. So why should we take the Old Testament as literally as fundamentalists do?

Please see my other comments regarding selfishness which were posted under "A Question of Accountability" below.

Oswald Chambers said the the new life in Christ removes our individuality, and frees our personality. The difference is, that individuality (ie. "rugged individualism") separates us from others, but our personality connects us with others naturally. Being a Christian is not about obliterating your personality, it is about freeing it up to be used for God's purposes.
