Tolerance vs. Accountability

Submitted by Triple Q on January 15 2001 17:30:39

I think, in the long run, we're all held accountable for our actions...whether it's by our own hand or someone else's.

What I find disturbing though is the way that people use accountability to establish a domain of tolerance. If a person makes himself accountable for his own actions, then there is a certain amount of tolerance that follows it the wake of the accountability. But, if a person denies his accountability, then the tolerance vanishes as quickly as it was given in the first place.

Not to encompass Christianity as a whole, but I find that Christians as a body are more likely to follow this path (not that non-Christians are totally exempt here)...and it's a wholly inadequate method to judge a person by his degree of accountability. If a Christian truly believes what he claims, then ALL people will be held accountable in the Final Judgement...so why judge them by merely human standards?

I know I've fallen into the pit of primal rage from time to time. I've "sinned". And, at these times, I fail to hold myself accountable for my actions. Does that mean that tolerance and understanding are wholly denied to me?

I know that the majority of the people who post here have more respect for the people that they are "flaming". Anger is beneficial to a degree, but tolerance of those who are different from you does not necessarily make you weak or timid. And only when you hold yourself accountable for your own actions (over the actions of others) will you realize that the actions of others can't hurt you.
