Howdy Sheesh, I've read a bunch of your posts on BC but for some reason haven't replied to many.

I'm not what one would call the most devout religiod person. Most of my time thinking about religion is spent wondering if I should believe in it.

I had explained away religion as an expected development in human psychological evolution, as in, early man saw things they couldn't explain and attributed it to gods. I had thought many modern religions pompous, after all, we don't really believe that lightning is thrown down by Thor, right? We don't believe the planet Mercury is a messenger anymore, right?

I had thought, how can people today think that their religion is correct just because it is theirs and it hasn't been made defunct by modern science?

What needs to be realised, I think, is that not everything in the Bible is to be taken literally (remember, this is only my personal opinion, a lot of people take it word for word and I have nothing against that). A lot of the Old Testament is Jewish mythology. It's unlikely the entire human race spawned from two people who had two sons.

Jesus (even in other religions, He's regarded as a great prophet) showed people a new look at God. The God of the Old Testament is a vengefull one. The New Testament displays God as merciful and benevolent.

I don't really know how to end this, I didn't have a specific point or conclusion in mind, but if you really believe in God, think of Him as a caring father who sometimes had to be strict in His child's younger years.
