The words of mine you quoted came to me by a long and often confusing process. I started reading Thomas Merton back in the early 1980's. I knew what he'd written had a ring of truth....even profound truth to it. But, I could never exactly figure out what he was saying. Every year or so, I'd re-read some of his works and end up maybe a little closer to understanding, but still quite a way from being there. Then, providentially, Dirk pointed me to Nouwen, who he (Dirk) thought was similar to Merton. That was the key for me. Reading Nouwen unlocked the previously hidden (to me) meaning of what I'd read from Merton. How to make this kind of discovery part of an organized process though.....I wish I knew; but at this point I don't. ---Ford |
