If someone is truly committed to Christ.... then in the end they will both do God's will and end up with God for eternity. But the only proof that they are really committed to Christ is that they do God's will (as James argues....) Whilst it may be true that the truly born again (to adopt the biblical terminology) will find their way back to God, the only demonstration that they were ever born again lies in the fact that they do return to God. The danger lies in the prospect that people will interpret this as a green light to gratuitously ignore what God is telling us - and in practice end up turning their backs on God because they have never really been born again. It is notable that the emphasis of the New Testament epistles is always on encouraging Christians to fight on, seeking after God's way etc. That is the uncomfortable message that needs to be proclaimed; to focus on other things which have the effect of neutering that challenge, even if they are true, is a very dangerous road to follow. Of course such an emphasis is in accord with the culture of the world today which likes to hear that in fact they are OK, despite God's clear words to the contary. |
