I think you hit the nail on the head.

Politics is all about getting re-elected. That means those who can muster votes or money get a lot of attention from elected officials.

If you want to effect change, get organized, raise money and votes, and see that your elected officials know you are a force to be reckoned with. It's a lot more effective than talking about it here.
