Dear damien, Wow. Thanks for sharing this part of your story and I look forward to getting to know you more. Interesting how we both gave our lives to Jesus at the same time (I was fourteen also). You stated that you were aware of your gay feelings at this stage but hoped that you would grow out of them. When I was fifteen I came to the realization that I was not gay, but a boy lover. Both of us seem to have come to awareness around this age, even though that awareness was different. My awareness came about when I realized that I was no longer attracted to my peers, who had now entered puberty and that when I had been attracted to them (pre-puberty), I had never been attracted to teenagers or adult men. Quite opposite to your early Christian years, I have never known what it is like to be in any strong fellowship and have always had to stand alone in my faith (except for my sister who is also a Christian). I’m so sorry to hear about what your pastor did when you opened up to him about your sexuality. I can imagine a sense of terrible betrayal, something that I too have felt after sharing my sexuality with other Christians. The action taken by the church withdrawing your membership was very wrong and I just wanted to say that while people can withdraw you from ‘a’ church, they can never withdraw you from ‘the’ church – you belong to Jesus forever.
