but it seems to come round every so often. And it is a really problematic issue; I'm commited to the belief that gay relationships aren't God's plan for humans - but to try to broaden the discussion out a bit: Why do we believe what we believe about God? There are 4 main answers offered in church history: 1) Direct revelation - God told me.... 2) The bible says 3) The church says 4) Nature says 1 is the view historically espoused by Quakerism and in recent years by the parts of the Pentecostal / Charismatic movement 2 is the classical protestant view 3 is the Catholic / Orthodox view 4 is an element that occaisionally emerges; it is part of Paul's arguments at times in the New Testament, but is generally associated with the 'Romantic' movement. All of us tend to wander between these different elements to a greater or lesser extent. The New Testament itself offers a strong affirmation of 'the church says' argument - especially whoever it was who bought you to faith; that person has some measure of authority in your life since they were the one through whom you found God for yourself. (Just a throw away line.....) Much ink has been spilt over the years defending each position; at the moment I'd like to see what others believe and why! |
