How they choose to deal with the situation will determine to some extent whether the terrorism escalates or deescalates.

Responding with power and excessive pride that ignores, for the most part, the view of the USA in the eyes of the rest of the world and concentrates on the interests of the USA and ignores the interests of everyone else, in my judgment, will cause terrorism to increase. As I see it, a change in direction requires a shift in attitude from using power and control to sharing rights, privilieges and freedoms. Basically, the opposite of the war on terrorism.

Twenty plus years ago I took a course called "Systematic Training for Effective Parenting." Part of the method from the course for analysis and determining action for problem behavior seems to fit here (the parts after the ":" are from the course).

The goal of terrorism: revenge.

The faulty belief of the terrorist is: I belong only by hurting others as I feel hurt. I cannot be loved.

Our feeling after the terrorist attacks: deeply hurt.

Our reaction: Tendency to retaliate and get even.

Terrorists' response: Seeks further revenge by intensifying misbehavior or choosing another weapon.

Our alternatives: Avoid feeling hurt. Avoid punishment and retaliation. Build trusting relationship; convince other that she or he is loved.

For most people in the USA of whom I'm aware, the difficult part of the alternative is not feeling hurt by the attacks of 9/11. I didn't! As a boylover, I've been more hurt by ignorance of people with whom I've tried to live over the last decade! And I haven't had any major "incidents"!

"War" seems to be the easy way to "fight" terrorism, but the result if positive is only temporary. The long-term result is more terrorism. Accomplishing the alternatives with youth isn't easy. It won't be easy with nations either.
