I have also followed your discussion with Mark on the various forms of therapies available for "treating" (I know how much you dislike such quotations, forgive me) sexual feelings that fall outside the range of societal norms with some interest. I admit to finding your parallels to people who have desires to rape and murder boys quite distasteful as such desires have nothing to do with sexual feelings and everything to do with a need to exert power and control over another human being to the extreme, coupled with a complete lack of empathy for anyone. Such parallels do nothing but tragically reinforce the societal stereotype of a pedophile as the guy lurking in the bushes, waiting for an opportunity to jump an unsuspecting child, rape him or her and kill them. You seem to be falsely equating orientation (which is to whom someone is attracted) with how one expresses those feelings (lovingly, engaging in s&m, rape). The medical community sadly still considers pedophilia as one of the paraphilias. People are sexually oriented towards adults and/or children of the same and/or opposite sex. Asking how Mark would respond if he suddenly woke up oriented to raping boys is both unrealistic and a gross category error - let's get back to the issue at hand: whether various therapies are ethical in "treating" sexual orientations. If this is not the issue at hand and I'm off in left field, please forgive me as I'm not altogether at my best these days. Look forward to dialoguing with you here. J |
