Perhaps there is a sense in which you are right, as Gandhi also said: "My effort should never be to undermine another's faith but to make him a better follower of his own faith." (See click-through link below) It could be taken that he supported Christianity in the sense that even though he wasn't a Christian himself, he would have supported a Christian becoming a "better follower of his own faith".
