At least during the late Republic, it was a real smear to accuse a Roman man of liking the sexual company of boys. Perhaps in classic Greece what you say could be accurate.

But there are examples extent of magisterial elections being manipulated by introduced rumors of pederasty among factions of candidates.

"So and so likes to diddle little boys" was a rumor that could hurt a candidate at the polls.
