My suggestion would be not to worry about what person x might have told person y, but to concentrate on the boy's diligence at school. Try to get into this whole school stuff and to support him as best as you can. Once his mother realizes that you are truly willing to advance his grades (at the latest when she sees the school report), she will no longer step between you and "D".
