Have you ever noticed that no one ever says "I felt a calling from God to be a janitor"? No one ever says "I felt this strong calling from God to clean the church bathrooms". Why? these things need to get done, if no one does them then the church must hire people or it cannot function. God wants someone doing those tasks, God needs people to clean his temple and to do the menial things. But you never hear someone say that they felt called by God to do that task. You never hear someones testimony about how God gave him a dream where he had a mop in his hands and was moping the floor. That's because working for God isnt about emotions or about waiting for divine enlightenment. Its more about finding out what needs to get done, and considering your skills, abilities, and potential, getting it done. Perhaps your calling is to be a minister who will save thousands. But equally likely, your calling might be to grab a hammer and some nails and get to work on the new church building. Or it might be to pick up the mop and clean up the church. Maybe your calling is to help the poor in your community. These are all things that if you sit back and wait for this feeling of enlightenment to come over you, you will never do them. But maybe they were your calling all along. Maybe since you decided to wait patiently rather than get up and look for what work you can do for God, you never found that plan he had laid out for you. Its a little like that story I bet we've all heard about the guy who drowned waiting for God to save him from the flood but refused the help of the helicopter and boat that God had sent to save him. Maybe when you get to heaven and God asks why didnt you do my work? and you answer, "I was waiting for you to tell me what to do" his answer might be "I told your pastor what needed to get done, but you didnt ask him".

Obviously, from the amount that I have written on this subject, this is something I feel strongly about. I feel strongly about this because the fact is that there are many things that need to get done that nobody likes to do. No one likes to clean a bathroom. Few people enjoy doing construction work. But these things need to get done, and part of God's plan for many people is to do these tasks. If we sit around waiting for this calling from God, we may never get it, but it was always there, we just didnt look, we chose to wait patiently rather than get up off our behind and look for something that needs to get done that we know we can do.

My suggestion to everyone is to use your pastor. Thats what hes there for, a pastor is a manager. Management's most important task is to coordinate the use of human resources. That is, delegation, the placing of the right persons in the right role so that everything that needs to get done gets done. Use your pastor, go up to him and say I want to work for God, I want to be active, what can I do?
