The basis of your argument is experimental - that I can determine on the basis of my experience and the experience of others what is right. The basis of Christianity is revealed religion - that God became man to save us from our sins, and that we can only be forgiven as a result of his grace. That's what revealed in the bible - and choosing which bits of the bible we want to accept and which we want to ignore is a dangerous sport. The second question is one about idolatry: vast swathes of the OT are about this - the Israelites raise up gods to worship in preference to God. If we construct a god whose attributes are different from the God of the bible and worship that, then we are engaging in idolatry. We may not understand WHY God is as He is, but at some point we just have to accept that. I don't know if that helps a great deal, but perhaps it widens the debate! |
