Christendom today is sexually repressive, sexually repressed. Some of the Protestant mainline churches have been accepting of adult gayness but only in a limited, prudish kind of context, as--no surprise--reflective of contemporary middle class values. I cannot see how BL can be explicitly imported into this schema. The church is a slave to the "family" concept--well, the peculiar-contemporary *nuclear* family arrangement (which is, after all, a product of economic forces, not religious ones). BL would undermine *that* particular concept of "family" and, so, is antithetical to the basis of today's church. |
