..smell of burning flesh that was pleasant to Him, but rather the hearts and obedience of His people that the sacrifice represented. I don't claim to be an expert on any OT topic but it would be logical that it's a metaphor. That being the case, it was Christ's heart and obedience that resembled the sacrifice in the crucifixion.

When you look at OT sacrifice it was a sequence of first an acknowledgment that was made that an atonement was necessary for sin; second, admission was made that another must make substitutionary atonement for him; third, the blood covered the sin to make it possible for God to withhold judgment; fourth, it made possible the communion of sinful man with a holy God; lastly, his sacrifice pointed to a day when Christ would once and for all atone for sin. Those steps are echoed in most people’s basic steps for accepting Christ today.

Additionally iconic images concerning the OT sacrifice of lambs and Christ being "The Lamb of God" are abundant. He was blameless and pure, sacrificed for the sins of the rest of us. The whole of the Law points to Christ as its fulfillment, and the prophesy concerning Christ often refers to him as the "Lamb of God."

I took a bit of this and that from different web sites, but it conveys the understanding that I've had. Hope that helps clear things up some for you.

Peace and Love,
Plato
