My dear boy, There are many ways to deal with stress and fear, and spirituality may or may not be the way to go. Certainly it has been my experience that a relationship with spirituality is not so much chosen as it is discovered. It is not (strictly speaking) an intellectual process, though the intellect is most certainly part of the process. So while a period of 'window shopping' for a path with heart has to be gone through, the selection of the 'right way' for you is not so much a choice as it is a recognition, like seeing the face of a friend in a crowd of strangers.
