The Gay Kids

Submitted by Bach on March 05 1999 at 07:52:07

Hi all,

Yesterday I heard about a mother and her son. They attend (not too regularly anymore) a local evangelical church. The son is gay, but not out to his church, and the mother lives with the pain of this isolation. The person who told me of them said that she burst into tears when he recognized her suffering.

As BLers, I often feel like we have a responsibility to help create a more welcoming atmosphere for gay teenagers. Knowing isolation ourselves, we should work to break down the barriers of mistrust and fear in our churches. All Evangelical churches must have gay teenagers -- and I'm sure you can imagine how they feel. Confused, alone, unloved, etc, etc.

I want to effect change. I don't know where to start. I don't even see how I could support this young man, given my own situation and the church he is affiliated with. Any suggestions?

Peace of Christ,
Bach
