A couple of clarifications. While I retain membership in PFLAG and I personally support the goals of the organization, I have stopped the public labelling of myself as a PFLAG member lest anyone get the idea that a) PFLAG endorses BA or b) BA endorses PFLAG. So Heather, please drop that label when you tell folks about me. BA is not endorsed by nor do we endorse any organization on either side of the divide. Also, what I defend is not exgay ministries. What I promote is accurate information about exgay ministries. I get as steamed up about the failure of exgay ministries and their allies to accurately represent reorientation as I do the failure of gays and their allies to accurately represent the ministries. But of course the ministries vary one from another so to generalize is automatically inaccurate. I don't want to be described as defending exgay ministries because it implies I discount the exex-gay experience. The horror stories of the exex-gays are valid, as are the testimonies of happy exgays. I strongly believe that our knowledge of sexuality depends upon being willing to listen and learn from the range of experiences, and that the hatred across the divide interferes with the acquisition of knowledge as well as damaging the lives of people. Have I just made an argument against our decision to exclude the listening to the life journeys of boylovers? Your stories do need to be heard, unquestionably. Again, I'm sorry that our limitations have led to exclusion. I'm glad that Heather's articles on Greenbelt News are getting hits. A story about an exgay who was the victim of a boylover. |
