I really wish that I could reach through the computer tonight and grab you by the hand and spend a few months with you. That you have not found God through praying the Lords prayer is so obvious to me, so necessary in fact, that it hurts me that I cannot show it to you in person.

Prayer is absolutely not a repetition of magical words, like a witches spell, that will magically transform you (though the Catholic church might tell you that). Prayer is totally meaningless if you do not believe in God and want a relationship with God. Prayer is about opening your heart and soul to God, telling God everything about you, how much you need him, how much you WANT him in your life. Prayer will only come if you absolutely believe in God and believe that he is hearing your prayers. Jesus taught the apostles that they could move a mountain if they really believed that their prayers would do it. (The mountain would never have moved of course because the apostles faith would always fall short :-) Furthermore, prayer is an important part of a much broader Christian life. I strongly suggest that you read the bible (just read the Gospels and Acts...try the KJV if you have patience and the NIV if you don't) and get your mind back on who Jesus was and what God wants from you. Certainly, you have to crawl before you walk. Praying something so huge as changing your orientation isn't likely to work if you don't even believe that God can help you, say lose weight, or feel happy tomorrow. Try praying the little things that you are willing to have faith about first.

The Lord's prayer is a poetic recitation that I use myself from time to time, but it is more like a song than a prayer. God doesn't want you to repeat things, he wants your heart.

You are not alone.

Ben (the fundamentalist :-)
