David -
Hebrews 10:2 is not a misquote. Instead, it is one of the parts of the bible that clergy don't share because they know it will scare people. We SHOULD be scared if we are deliberately accepting sin in our lives (and I count myself among them).

When we died to sin, we died to being a slave to sin. This means that we control our lives and do not allow them to be ruled by ways to turn against God. I do not believe that there is any mediocrety in God's expectation that we will not sin. However, when we DO sin, we are cleansed by Jesus' blood.

Romans 6

1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?
2By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
4We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
5If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.
6For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin--
7because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

What I take from this is that I can have no tolerance for sin in my life but I CAN have acceptance of falling short of the goal. If you set your sights at the top, you will do your best to attain that goal. On the other hand, if you set your sights somewhere in between, you will arrive somewhere short of where you could have.

You are not alone.
