I first read this speech last year, and it tore me apart when I read it, because all I could think was, "When will the day come when a conservative Baptist minister stands in front of an audience and says these words about pedophiles?" I've been gathering every religious resource I can about pedophilia, and not once have I heard any religious non-pedophile speak out against the violence and bigotry endured by minor-attracted adults. Perhaps that's why I find it harder these days to get worked up about homophobia in the Church – because I know that things are so much worse for pedophiles. Yet I suppose that, fifty years ago, homosexuality was where pedophilia is today, with no one speaking out against hate crimes against homosexuals. Lots and lots of hard work is needed to open people's eyes – I just wish that people would understand the general principle (don't hate someone for some aspect to him that he didn't choose) so that we wouldn't have to keep fighting this fight over and over again.
