Catholic views on sexuality

"What is the Catholic's basis for believing procreation is a primary purpose of sex?"

The orthodox Catholic view on sexuality is described in Humanae Vitae (linked below), which is a thoughtful document that is well worth reading, whether or not one agrees with its conclusions. Basically, the argument is based on the idea of natural law, so the argument isn't entirely coherent unless one is steeped in natural law theology. The way an Anglican friend of mine put it recently (in the context of a discussion on genetically altered human beings) is that the incarnation – God redeeming man by way of the natural world – demands that mankind not depart violently from nature.

I'm not convinced, but at least it's a more sophisticated argument than the "Be fruitful and multiply" one.
