I think the lady was brought up in a protestant environment, thought I'm not absolutely sure. Certainly she is a protestant believer now, though she appreciates the stupidity of excluding other types of believers from the Church. I was rather surprised to hear her support the sex-for-procreation approach, since I thought this had long been unequivocally debunked amongst protestants. But I'm sure she doesn't believe it idly or blindly, in so many other areas she is wonderfully reasonable and insightful, so I think I will have to continue discussing the question with her.

I'm not sure what her attitude to contraception inside marriage is, nor did I ask why she has only 3 children (a girl as well) if she is against the idea of contraception. Maybe she thinks it's OK after you've already got your 2.5 kids?

What is the Catholic's basis for believing procreation is a primary purpose of sex? Is it simply a straight-forward reading of Gen 1 "go forth and multiply"? I got my views of sex-for-union (not-for-procreation) from Gen 2, which doesn't make a single reference to children.
