Because the traditional Catholics do a wonderful job of designing a theology based on the belief that sexual activity must include the possibility of procreation – it's logical to a fault, if you accept the initial premise – but it does require one to believe, as your friend's mother does, that using birth control is as sinful as homosexual activity. Incidentally, this was the position of most Protestant churches until 1930, when the Church of England was brave enough to break away from the pack (some English Catholics consider this to have been the beginning of the end for the Anglicans).
