"Why am I sinful because of something someone else (Adam) did?"

A quick response, but not a flip one, is to point out the distinction between original sin and original guilt. The O'dox Church embraced the teachings of St. John Cassian rather than Augustine of Hippo. (The council which condemned St. John as a "semi-Pelagian" was only a local one, and certainly didn't prevent the Church in Gaul from dedicating churches to him.) Somewhere lurking on my bookshelves I've got a nifty description of the differences between the Eastern and the Western approaches to Romans 5:12-19. It might take some time for me to
dig up, but I'll try to find it and post tomorrow. In the meantime, take a look through the Romans passage and see if you can think of an alternative to the traditional interpretation most of us in the West have been taught.

With that in mind, maybe I can address where I think your question about body and soul may be leading. (If I'm wrong, tell me.) As far as I know, the Eastern churches have never identified sperm as the vehicle for transmission of "original sin". Other than that, I'm afraid I don't quite understand why you're asking what you're asking. Talk to me, and let's see where it goes.

Dirk
