Thoughtlessness, not malice. May I print your letter (with the boylover reference and names deleted) and show it to one of the people who organized the overall retreat? By the way, anal-retentive means someone who says "no you can't do that" or "you must do that" in the name of protocol, tradition, rules, or some other secondary purpose. When labor unions do a work slowdown, the do so by becoming "anal-retentive" about the work rules. When police announce "zero-tolerance for drunk driving" over the holiday weekend, they are being anal-retentive (in this case, it's a GOOD thing). If I were to tell a group "no, you can't do offensive skits" without first finding out if there was anyone there who would take offense, that would be acting anal-retentively. -David ("d") |
