I feel that my unusually strong need and desire to have close relationships with teenage boys is a gift from God. I agree with what Degennero said, "The pubescence crisis can be smoothened by an adult's loving care" and it's God's plan for my life that I be one of those adults who provide this love. I, too, find my friendships with youth to be mutual. The boy I mentor has several times thanked me in amazement for the things I would do for him. What he has a hard time understanding is how awesome it is for me to watch him grow up influenced by me in a positive way. What a great reward it was for me to be able to talk him into (it wasn't easy) going on a mission to Mexico this summer and see him reach out to others as I've reached out to him. Now he wants to spend all of next summer down there! Even though I'm 38 there's a part of me that never grew up. I stayed up tell 3:30 AM watching a Monty Python movie last Friday night with some kids and you know what.....it was a blast. I really enjoy hanging out with kids and doing stuff that a lot of adults wouldn't ever think of doing. The kids think I'm about the coolest adult dude they have ever seen and I can build their trust in me almost instantly. Then when the hard times come I can be there for them in a special way and show them God cares about them. Don |
