Scott - It sounds like you have already settled the issue for yourself. All Christians (myself certainly included) have run this same question through our minds. It doesn't seem to make any sense though that living in sin is consistent with God's plan for our lives, nor does it seem that he sent Jesus to die on the cross so that we could do whatever we want. Here are a few scriptures which help me to address the issue: Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. In this passage, we are reminded of the committment that we made to make Jesus our Lord. In such a case, we cannot serve our sinful nature and also serve Christ. Hebrews 10:26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left... This is one of those passages that I would gladly rip out of the bible. It virtually assures us that we are expected to make a committment to NOT live in sin (with the understanding that we will actually fall short of the mark). You are not alone. Ben |
