Hi, Heather!

Yes, I understood you were reporting Rogers' claims without endorsing them yourself. Still, I thought it meet to add the disclaimer.

As to AXIOS, I was going to mention them in my reply to d. I've just got a few comments.

First, it only exists in the New World -- Australia, Canada, and the US. This may only mean that for most of this century, the traditional Orthodox lands have been under the yoke of either Communism or Islam, neither of which are particularly hospitable to homosexuals. However, I suspect it's more an indication of the relaxed sexual mores of the West than it is the traditional Orthodox teaching. And since AXIOS clearly presents itself as challenging the status quo, I think this is more likely.

Second, although they make much of the Orthodox Rite of Brotherhood (Adelphopoesis) and Goar's "Same Sex Union," no reputable scholar of either Greek or liturgics agrees with their interpretation. (If you're REALLY interested, I can forward a critique of John Boswell's infamous work, written by Archimandrite Ephrem Lash, the principal translator of the Oxford University Press edition of the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom. It was published in Sourozh magazine, the journal of the Russian Orthodox diocese of Sourozh in Great Britain.)

The view advanced by AXIOS, or at least by the one member I've had contact with by email, is that monogamous homosexual relations are not incompatible with Orthodoxy.

Dirk
