I think it was Dickens' intention to make the Fagin character a pedophile, (boylover). The book gives a much better descriptive of his character, and the broadway musical is also a very fulfilling way to see the story. To act in it is even better. If I were to play the role of Fagin, I would approach him from a BL perspective too. I'll have to check on the DVD version of the movie. I bet it is spectacular to listen to in DDS.
