Dear zip,

One of the problems that I ran into when God first started to be important to me was knowing what to read, when to read, and how to read the Bible. When I was baptised, my church gave me a copy of the "One Year Bible" published by Tyndale. It's available in various translations, and what they've done is taken the Bible and arranged it so that there are readings from the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Psalms, and the Proverbs for each day of the year. For instance, January 30 has Exodus 10:1-12:13, Matthew 20:1-28, Psalm 25:1-11, and Proverbs 6:6-11. The cool thing is, if you keep at this over a few years, you'll have read the Bible cover to cover multiple times! Let's face it, there are passages in Leviticus and Numbers which are just stupefyingly boring, but having other stuff to read each day makes it a little easier to get through.

For years I worked at a gas station, which left me oodles of time to read, so I used to read the passages, and then dig into Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible. This is an older book, but when it comes to studying Scripture, I'd rather go with something that's stood the test of time instead of trying to keep up with the theological trend of the week. I had a good routine going of praying and reading first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, I've been really slack lately. (In my defense, I now commute more than an hour a day, compared to 10 minutes before.) I do receive daily Scripture readings and meditations by email, which is more my speed these days.

Dirk
