I married five years ago this spring; I think that SatinLady married recently. It's a little hard to tell what exactly was going on in the birth narratives – whether they were symbolic manners of expressing theological beliefs, or whether they were a straightforward account of what occurred. In any case, the way the story is told is that everyone was convinced that Joseph was not the father, and Joseph married her despite this. Joseph would have had to have been a real heel to have first claimed that Mary had been impregnated by someone else, and then say, "God came to me and told me to marry her." I'd prefer to think that he married her despite everyone finding his action scandalous (which is what the story implies). Heather |
