Hi Fod,

I should like to think the latter, that God does not ask things of us for no good reason, but because they will bring some good and life and love.
But I find it truly difficult to identify any objectively good reason for God to stand against homosexuality. It's like he says it's wrong (as many or most read it in the Bible) because he wants to say it's wrong, not because there's any real reason for doing so. And I find that a very sour justification for Will.

I find a natural 'Amen' rising to that logic, but I have to remember the big picture as well.

The idea that things are simply wrong "because God says so" doesn't seem good enough, but I remember that for some reason it has been good enough for millions in previous centuries. Yet we are now in a different world. One by one, scientists and psychologists have been discovering good reasons for things that in previous ages were just "God's rules", and so we expect that we should be able to find the reason for all of them. Like you I still struggle to understand what the reason might be in this case, although there is one thing I've been thinking about recently - If I were to choose a lifestyle on the margin of society, and never marry etc., who is my real "family"? Where is my identity in this life? Where will my significant relationships be? What will old age be like? That's not just a question about sexuality; it ranges wider into the whole area of friendship and relationships.

Of course if I limit the biblical "rules" to being objections against the worst excesses of ritual idolatrous prostitution or promiscuity, as some claim, then the psychological damage God is protecting us from is clear enough! But it seems too much of a big claim for me to make at the moment.

With Christian love,

Jules
